Obama violating the Constitution with seizure of Census?

John Fund wrote an article at the WSJ called Why Obama Wants Control of the Census in which he wastes no time answering that question with the article’s subtitle: Counting citizens is a powerful political tool.   Fund points out that many things get apportioned and doled out based upon the numbers that come out of the Census and how fudging those numbers can spell more political power for the fudgers.  Obama has recently taken control of the next Census and will have it run directly by the White House.  Fund writes:

President Obama said in his inaugural address that he planned to “restore science to its rightful place” in government. That’s a worthy goal. But statisticians at the Commerce Department didn’t think it would mean having the director of next year’s Census report directly to the White House rather than to the Commerce secretary, as is customary. “There’s only one reason to have that high level of White House involvement,” a career professional at the Census Bureau tells me. “And it’s called politics, not science.”

Not only is this a seizure of power that would have every leftist in America seething if the junta seizing the new power was Republican, this is potentially an unconstitutional act.  Since the requirement for the Census is spelled out in Article 1 of the Consitution (which is completely devoted to the legislative branch), many people believe strongly that it should not be controlled by the Chief Executive.

This is yet another example of both Obama’s true hardball dirty Chicago politics and of how Leftists perennially get a pass for things that would have the media in an uproar with a GOP administration.
